Music | Bittles’ Magazine: The music column from the end of the world Supergroups don’t work! We all know this, right? At times it can seem as if forming a supergroup is nothing more than an excuse to get together with some mates, dick around, consume copious amounts of drugs, and issue the results of a farting contest on deluxe vinyl while wanking on in interviews about how you have created ‚great art‘. This need not always be the case though! By JOHN BITTLES
Music | Bittles’ Magazine: The music column from the end of the world I know I may sound overly romantic saying this, but a great album should have the power to erase daily stresses and strains. With world affairs and current politics seemingly more depressing than ever we need our creative arts to step up and remove us, however temporarily, from the horrors of everyday life. This week I will be highlighting some of the LPs which have accomplished this feat by stealing my time and creating an addictive craving in my very soul. By JOHN BITTLES
Music | Bittles’ Magazine: The music column from the end of the world When I first heard the Somber Clarity EP by AntiAlias, the very first release on new Berlin based label Schakal Records, it felt as if I had discovered a brand new friend. Deeply hypnotic, trance-tinged, sexy and propulsive it leapt right out of the speakers and into my heart. Backed up by a long, percussive remix by Midas 104 & Jonas Saalbach, the record seemed to make June 2015 a great time to be alive. By JOHN BITTLES
Music | Bittles’ Magazine: The music column from the end of the world With the world today seemingly dominated by the stale and the dull we need our musical mavericks more than ever! Since musicians who are prepared to take chances are rarer than a politician who would refuse a bribe, those who ignore structure, sneer at genre, or confound as much as delight deserve to be cherished by all. One such artist is new Tri Angle Records signing Katie Gately whose debut LP, Color, will act as a soothing balm to anyone tired and angry with the lack of
Music | Bittles’ Magazine: The music column from the end of the world Phil Kieran is something of a musical chameleon. Shifting between tempos and genres with glee, he is a DJ/producer who, over a long and distinguished career has never been content to continuously revisit one sound. From the tough techno of his celebrated EPs on Soma, to the low-slung funk of his Le Carousel alias, taking in any number of twisted delights in between, Mr Kieran ably fits the definition of master of all trades. Music | Bittles’ Magazine: The music column from the end of the world No one could ever accuse house icon Dinky of being a one trick pony! Over a long and varied career her musical output and DJ sets have incorporated deep techno, hazy ambiance, hedonistic acid, classic house, alternative pop, and much more. Her latest single Casa (released earlier this year) was a spell-bindingly deep slice of Chicago-inspired house that is already sitting pretty as one of the songs of the year. In contrast, the album Dimension D saw Dinky embrace her inner singer-songwriter, while the warmth she managed
Music | Bittles’ Magazine: The music column from the end of the world With UK clubs closing faster than Donald Trump can find people to offend, finding a safe place to dance on a Saturday night can seem futile at times. Recently London institution Fabric joined the likes of Plastic People and The Arches in closing their doors for good! By JOHN BITTLES
Music | Bittles’ Magazine: The music column from the end of the world The good people at Wikipedia define Posthuman as »a concept originating in the fields of science fiction, futurology, contemporary art, and philosophy that literally means a person or entity that exists in a state beyond being human«. If you look a bit further though, you will find that Posthuman are also a DJ and production duo who have had a big hand in bringing the sweet sounds of acid house into our lives. By JOHN BITTLES
Music | Bittles’ Magazine: The music column from the end of the world 2016 is shaping up to be a vintage year for ambient music. Fantastic releases by Pye Corner Audio, 2814, Thomas Ragsdale, MJ Guider, Huerco S and Diamondstein illustrate how exciting this genre can be. With a whole generation of acid house disciples reaching an age where going to a club is more of a pain in the ass than a joy, it seems there has never been a better time for indulging in all things chilled. In September, renowned experimental composer Eluvium reaffirms this view with the
Music | Bittles’ Magazine: The music column from the end of the world With the Olympics failing to inspire, it can seem as if the only way to spend the long summer months is by playing endless rounds of tiddlywinks, or consuming copious amounts of Jammy Dodgers. But, that doesn’t have to be the case. There is a better way! For instance, you can take up ant farming, as my good friend Jeffrey has recently done, or immerse yourself in the wealth of fantastic new music which has recently come out. Personally, I would recommend the latter. By JOHN BITTLES
